Other Tools and Accessories for Small Animals

Enclosure Cleaning Materials: Cages and other enclosure equipment need to be cleaned and disinfected regularly. Use one part bleach and one part thirty parts water to clean the enclosure. White vinegar is also a safe cleaning option. Litter has to be collected and disposed of responsibly -- there are garbage bags for this.

Grooming Tools: Grooming does not help your animal look good, it also provides an opportunity for you to bond with your pet. You need only a few grooming essentials, brush for the animal and nail clipper for the nails. Some animals like gerbils, however, trim their own nails so you don't need to do it. If you have a chinchilla, you need to give it a dust bath regularly. Mix nine parts silver sand and one part fuller earth - these can be purcahsed at any pet store - then let your chinchilla roll in it for at least 15 minutes everyday.

Litter Box: Some pet species such as rabbits and ferrets can be trained to use the litter box. Put the litter box in one corner of the cage. The litter box should be made of heavy and durable material; it should be hard to chew or break and it shouldn't tip easily. Clumping or "scoopable" litter can be added to make cleaning easier.

Toys: Toys allow your pet to have the fun and exercise it neds. This is important because most under-exercised animals obese. With objects to play with, your pet doesn't get bored easily. Most commonly used toys are rolling balls and wood-based chewing blocks.
